Dr. D. Michael Battey
About
During my careers, I owned and remodeled several homes, rental houses, and an office building where I owned a medical office. After retirement, I worked for FEMA as an inspector for homes damaged by hurricanes and floods. I am well-versed in radiological hazards (radon gas), mold & bacterial hazards, zoning issues, sanitation issues and septic tank/ sewage issues, and I'm certified in asbestos inspection and remediation. For a general cellar to attic inspection of homes prior to purchase, I am your man. For a second opinion on house or office repairs or remodeling, I can make detailed lists of problems of poor or non-code workmanship.
I'm now NABCEP certified in solar electric/ photovoltaics. I've found that energy conservation in the home has a better return on investment than alternative energy sources. Solar is going to grow exponentially in the next several years, and lighting, appliances, etc. will be much more efficient. The time to improve insulation and switch to energy-saving lights is NOW. I can give you sound advice on that as part of my inspection, no additional cost.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
I show up promptly with ladders, lighting, safety equipment, laser and tape measure, voice recorder, etc. It takes at least two hours to transcribe and organize my written report.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Health Physics Technician
Medical lab technology training
Asbestos inspection and remediation certification
Certification by North American Board of Certified Energy Practicioners
FEMA training in home inspections for structural damage to homes, foundations, mold abatement, sanitation, electrical, sewer, and overall habitability.
"On the job" training in flooring, baseboards, painting, drywall, plaster, concrete, air conditioning, plumbing fixtures, kitchen cabinets, trim work, insulation, etc, as a landlord and office building owner.
How did you get started in this business?
As a landlord of rental homes and a multi-use office building. I learned to do EVERYTHING. I totally enjoyed working with FEMA, helping home owners get back on their feet after their homes and everything in them had been all or partly destroyed.
What types of customers have you worked with?
As far as fixing problems that we find (after a closing), I prefer artistic work like cabinet refinishing, faux painting on walls, detailed plaster work, trim work, staining trim and baseboards, etc. But I enjoy inspections that lead to beautiful renovations. There are a lot of incompetance and rip-offs in this business. I value my ability to "read" contractors and their honesty, integrity, and intentions.
What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a pro in your area of expertise?
Let's work together as a team with your realtor, appraiser, and lender. Good communications, good written plans, and written schedules are the key to a home you'll be thrilled with. It's your property and your investment.
