Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
Each new customer is assigned a team of sitters - a primary sitter and a secondary sitter. This way, if the primary sitter is out of town, or has an emergency, the client and pet do not have a lapse in care. We like to begin with each new client by setting up a meet n greet so that they have a chance to meet each of their sitters. At the meet and Greet the sitters can meet the client and the pet(s) as well as learn the layout of the home and learn the care instructions for the pet. This is also when we will ask for two copies of the keys from the client.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Each sitter is thoroughly background checked and undergoes extensive training. Sitters also spend time shadowing experienced sitters before they are allowed to do sits on their own.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your services? If so, please share the details here.
Once you book a service with us our meet n greet is 100% free! We do not charge additional fees for administering medication or anything like that. The only additional fees you'll ever incur from us for pet care are extra pets ($2 per pet for walks and $5 per pet for overnights) and for holiday dates which incur a surcharge of $5 per visit. The dates that are classified as holidays can be found on our website.
How did you get started in this business?
Smyrna Paw Pals was founded by Kelley Curran in 2017 when she realized that dog daycares were not providing the appropriate level of care for her canine companions. She began walking dogs instead of working in the kennel she had been spending her days with and never looked back.
What types of customers have you worked with?
Smyrna Paw Pals has worked with customers of all different types from feline friends to canine companions. We have even worked with guinea pigs! We have worked with single moms, young professionals, retirees who travel, and families with busy after school schedules, plus everything in between...what each of our Paw Pals Families has in common is a Furry Friend who needs love and attention and that's what we provide on a daily and consistent basis.
What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a pro in your area of expertise?
We highly recommend spending time finding the right groomer/sitter/walker for you and your family - even if that person isn't us. First off, hire a professional company, not just ONE person on Rover, Wag, or a neighborhood kid. If it is just ONE person there is no backup when something goes wrong. No matter how professional they may be, even if this is their full-time job, emergencies and accidents happen and when they do, you don't want your pet to suffer because your sitter had an emergency. Second, make sure any company you work with is bonded and insured. Although you hope nothing ever goes wrong, you want to be protected if it does. Bonding protects your home, insurance protects you and your pets. Lastly, make sure they do a meet n greet and make sure you feel comfortable. At the end of the day, you need to trust your gut. If you are getting a bad vibe, call it off and find someone else. Your pet's health and safety are worth the extra time and investment. ALWAYS.
What questions should customers think through before talking to pros about their needs?
1. What kind of care am I looking to get for my pet? Do we need daily walks? Every other day? Or just visits for a vacation? 2. Is dog walking or mobile grooming something I can afford to invest in right now? If so, what is my budget? If not, what are some healthy alternatives for my pup? 3. Am I comfortable with someone else having a key to my home?
