About

Hello,

I'm glad you found me! I have loved dogs all my life, and established my training practice in 2005, to give other dog lovers more gentle, science-based options than some of the harmful misinformation widely circulating.

I work, one-on-one with you and your family, in your home, to develop a training and/or behavior plan that's individually designed to address your unique dog and family's needs.

I'm a Certified Professional Dog Trainer-Knowledge Assessed, a Certified Dog Behavior Consultant, a Certified American Treibball Trainer, and the owner of Capitol Area Dog Training and Behavior Consulting, LLC, in Germantown, MD.

In my 16 years of training and behavior practice, I've worked with a broad range of breeds and sucessfully solved an equally broad range of behavioral issues, by teaching dogs better alternative behaviors, and teaching their owners practical , effective management techniques. I work with clients in their homes, where their family and dog are most comfortable, to provide gentle and effective, science-based solutions to training and/or behavior issues.

I've served as trainer/consultant to eleven regional and breed-specific rescue organizations, and two human-centered non-profits, to provide public access training for their placed assistance dogs.

I'm a professional member of the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants, the Association of Professional Dog Trainers, the Force-Free Pet Professionals Guild, a Certified American Treibball Trainer and is an American Kennel Club Canine Good Citizen trainer and evaluator.

As the author of numerous magazine articles on behavior and training issues, I continue to stay informed of current behavioral research, to offer clients the most up-to-date training methods and techniques. I'm also a co-founder, and currently serve as President of the American Treibball Association, and the author of “Get the Ball Rolling: A Step by Step Guide to Training for Treibball”, published by Dogwise (2013) available online there, and on Amazon.com.

I want to hear about the challenges you're facing with your dog. Call me, and let me help!

l love watching dogs learn, and their owners being amazed at their progress. While each dog is an individual, with it's own learning style (just like us, humans), each family relationship is unique as well. I am totally commited to teaching my client's how to meet thier dog in the middle; to communicate more clearly, and understand how to solve behavior issues in a mutually beneficial and non-punitive way.

    Frequently asked questions

I have 6 and 8 week Puppy and Adult training programs available, and my individual behavior modification plans begin with an intial 8 week committment. All training plans begin with an in-home consultation, to meet the dog and family, discuss the process and set our goals for training and establish a schedule.

My behavior plans begin with clients filling out a behavioral history questionnaire prior to the consult, to provide a baseline for our work, going forward. I design their individual plan based on that questionnaire, and information I observe and gather during the consultation. We work the plan as written the first few weeks, tweaking it as we go, based on the progress of the dog. Half-way through, I'll do a mid-term assessment, so we we can make any major adjustments needed for the following weeks. At the end of the plan, clients receive a status report, as what progress has been made, and recommendations for followup.
