About JRS, AIA

John R. Schroeder, AIA is a professional design firm specializing in architecture, interiors, and planning. We have over 30 years experience with projects of all types, sizes, and levels of complexity. Because we love what we do, we approach our work with enthusiasm and dedication. We are committed to the highest level of design and service on each and every project. We engage our clients in positive and rewarding collaborations. We strive to exceed expectations through our attention to detail, our understanding of the “big picture”, and our ability to effectively manage a team of design professionals, industry representatives, and building contractors. We carefully analyze budgets and project objectives to assist clients with wise fund allocation.

We continually monitor and research advances in technology, materials, and construction methods, both sustainable and otherwise, to provide a responsible, well-suited, and cost effective product. Our design solutions are highly functional using both innovative and traditional approaches. Our aesthetic style is flexible and open, blending cues from client desires, building function, site context, and material properties, making each project unique, personalized, and enduring.

John R. Schroeder, AIA also offers art consulting services for residential, corporate, institutional, and hospitality clients through eo art lab art consulting.

We love the variety in our work. Every client is different than the one before with different lifestyles, family dynamics, backgrounds, professions, priorities, and tastes. Every project has a different set of opportunities and challenges including the age, condition, and style of the home or business; the size, shape, location, orientation, and configuration of the property; and the level of interplay of municipal, state, and/or federal regulations. And with ever-changing technology, materials, fixtures, and construction methods, no two project are ever alike.

Frequently asked questions

We first meet with the potential client at their home or business to discuss their needs in more detail and to tell them a little more about our firm and the design and construction process in general.  We then provide a proposal letter outlining our fees and services. If everything is making sense, we provide a standard contract for review and signing and then begin the process of design, documentation, pricing, permitting, and construction.

On very small projects of limited scope or for Master Plans, we typically provide fixed fees.  Otherwise, we typically operate based on a percentage fee which can vary up or down based on budget and level of project complexity.

I wanted to be an architect starting when I was about 10 years old.  I know, it's funny, but I used to take house design magazines and modify the plans or elevations however my imagination directed me.  I used to do the same with automoblie ads, where I would trace the car profile and then erase the front or rear half and redesign it.

All sorts of people from all over Connecticut and greater New England.  It's always fun and exciting!

Of course, all of them!

Do your research, meet the professional, and determine your level of comfort and trust based on personality, professionalism, experience, talent, level of service, and responsiveness.

What are your project needs and desires?  What are your design likes and dislikes? What is your budget?  What is your schedule?

The most important things to remember are that the overall process takes time to unfold, so don't wait until the last minute to call the professional; that the real world of design and construction is not reflected accurately in the home and business improvement shows on TV; and that design and building is very much a team effort.
