Although I have a deep passion for caring about animals, I wasn’t always around them because I’m allergic. But, I still knew that I had loved them because of my stuffed animals that filled a dog-sized gap in my childhood. Growing up, I was homeschooled from the second grade and raised in a Catholic family. My parents were self-employed and always looking for new ways to enrich my education. The first time I was given responsibility for an animal was when I was about 8. I was given the opportunity to own two small pets: an Egyptian Uromastyx “Spike” and a Holland Lop “Easter.” I was still allergic to the rabbit, but I loved him all the same.

Because my parents were self-employed, I always had the intention of owning my own business, I thought I wanted to be a veterinarian, but my allergies were not manageable and I cast aside that dream. I focused on honing my creative side, dabbling in piano, drawing, sewing, and cooking. When I was 16, I expressed an interest in wanting to start a Pho restaurant, but to save on the stress, we started a food truck called “Manna From Heaven” instead. This business venture allowed me to develop the work ethic I have today. Unfortunately, as I got older, I began to outgrow my parents’ house and business. On my 18th birthday, I decided to leave my parents and make my own way.

Once I was on my own, I got a few food service jobs to save up enough money to have my very own dog. Once I had saved enough, I searched as hard as I could, and found a two-month-old Saint Bernard, who I named Elvis! I then became the Kitchen Manager at a certified-organic ice cream company, and am still working there today. After three winters spent earning extra cash with odd jobs, I decided to start my own pet service: Kat’s K9s, LLC. We’re nearing our second year in business and still going strong!

With my business, I am finally starting to fulfill my lifelong dream of working with animals every day!
