How did you get started in this business?
After a four-year degree in Interior Design, I worked as a designer for a prominent West Hollywood furniture showroom. My role was to meet with potential customers and discuss solutions for their homes while promoting the brand. After two years, I opened my own firm which I have independently operated for the last seventeen years. I have always strived to work with diverse clients which I find key in remaining creative.
What types of customers have you worked with?
We work with anyone with whom we feel a successful rapport can be established. From young professionals moving into their first home to a lovely couple well into their nineties, our clients have been extremely diverse. We have also worked with small and large businesses. Our process isn't based on scale but on providing a service to all. Our hourly billing allows us to take on projects of many sizes and budgets.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
To stay current, I attend as many professional trade conventions as possible, in the US and Worlwide. I research materials, furniture and establish contact with potential resources. We tend to procure materials and furniture from trade vendors. However, we also work with retail outlets if and when necessary.
What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a pro in your area of expertise?
We always begin by telling potential clients that the design process should be enjoyable. Putting ideas together is an extremely rewarding experience. The journey -short or long- should not be driven by unnecessary constraints or restrictions. Design is about exploring options. Most clients are concerned with making mistakes yet, as I often outline, nothing is set in stone until purchases have been made and confirmed.
What questions should customers think through before talking to pros about their needs?
I believe clients should formulate their expectations clearly. They should also understand the design process before committing to any professional. Not all designers work in the same fashion. The design process plays a significant part in the success of a designer/client relationship. If and when I feel potential clients may not adhere to our process, I often refer them to other design professionals whose approach may be more suitable.
