I am a Scandinavian-American architect with strong connections to Denmark and the Danish design tradition. Trained in the Nordic design tradition at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, my Scandinavian approach to design has evolved to create work characterized by timeless simplicity, refined elegance, and careful refinement of detail.

My award-winning portfolio of work, much of which has been published widely in international journals and books, is often associated with the subtle aesthetic qualities of Japanese and Danish minimalism.

m Danish living in California. At the moment I am working with Todd Verwers for the third time on a complete remodel of my home in Palm Springs. I have only one word to say about Todd:

Genius !! Oh... and one more: The nicest person you will ever want to meet.

We had 12 people for a cocktail party last night. All doors open, fire places going, the house lit like a jewel box, people moving in and out, the flow fantastic because of……. YOU! I love my house.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

I prefer to meet directly with the client to review the project parmameters and program, and to see the building lot or existing home, depending on whether the project is for new construction, or and addition or remodel. Then I perform due diligence with the local building authorities to flush out all project requirements and constraints. Once we have signed a services agreement, I perform Schematic design, Design Develpment, and Construction Documents services to fully document the project for bidding and construction. I usually also represent the client through bidding and construction, and perform construction administration services as the client's agent.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I am a dual US/Danish citizen with a strong Nordic design background. I have a Bachelor of Architecture degree from the United States, and have completed graduate studies at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen.

I have been licensed as an architect in California since 2001, and have extensive international experience over a broad range of project types, including custom residential projects. I am able to work on projects over the entire United States.

Fees for architectural services vary from project to project, and are dependent on various parameters, including project and services scope, budget, etc. Fees can generally be negotiated and tailored to the client's needs.

How did you get started in this business?

Architecture is a unique profession, in that it requires creative, artistic sensitivities together with technical expertise. I have always been fascinated by the emotive power of design, and was drawn to the architecture, the "mother of the arts", since I was very young.

What types of customers have you worked with?

I work with all types of clients from a variety of backgrounds, whether they have limited or unlimited funds for the project, with varying levels of education, etc. I tend to attract European clients given my background, and people who have a strong appreciation for architecture and the arts. Most projects, regardless of scope or budget, have good potential to be exceptional.

Describe a recent event you are fond of.

Construction can be a slow process requiring patience and literally thousands of decisions. The culmination of the hard, collaborative work by the owner and the architect is the realization of the project, which can be incredibly rewarding. I love this final phase of the project, when everything comes together, and the client is thrilled with the result.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a pro in your area of expertise?

Most people do not understand the added value a talented architect can give to a project, and how important it is that the architect be retained through the construction phase.

What questions should customers think through before talking to pros about their needs?

Clients considering any construction project need to be somewhat clear on the general parameters of their project with regard to program, scope, budget, and schedule. Good architects can assist in refining and aligning the building program with budget and schedule early on in the collaboration.
