 Initially we instruct them to fill out a application from our website. Upon receipt of the application it is reviewed by program director and assisstant staff. After review, staff, We will meet with prospective client and discuss appropriate training. If the client owns a dog we will schedule an assessment to determine the dogs temperment, trainability and drive, If the client is wanting to train the dog as a service dog, the assessment will give us the factors needed to determine eligibility for training or if we would need to assist in locating an appropriate dog for tasks needed.

i have been working with service dogs for more than 18 years originally mentoring and interning under a compulsive training (use of force and shock or other deferring items) program however I preferred the positive or balanced training utilizing games. In 2006 I changed to a positive training approach and prefer it to others. I have attended multiple Courses and continue to do so to expand my research of new techniques as well as I am always willing to learn new approaches

I originally began training in 1999 under a compulsive training service dog program in Mass but often found I did not like the force approach so I began researching other programs. I found the use of positive and balanced training much more effective. I had my own service dog at the time and wanted to find a program which offered more support around training as well as connections with others who had similiar issues. After moving to Tucson in 2005 I could not find a program similiar to what I wanted so I constructed RSD and began working with a small number of clients. After some time we incorporated our program into a family style community where clients with similar diagnosis can reach out and ask each other for advice as well as a family style structure.
