Down Range K9 is a veteran owned and operated professional dog training business located in Southwest Ohio. Here at Down Range K9 we provide comprehensive high-quality dog training geared to meet our clients’ needs and enrich the human and dog relationship. We will accomplish this through providing an exceptional training platform that is geared towards puppy training, basic and advanced obedience, and also aggressive dog behavioral modification.
Ryan West owner and head trainer of Down Range K9 has been training dogs since 2013. He served 6 years in the Army as a Military Police Officer where he made deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. After the military he worked for several years in the financial industry before he decided to follow his passion and become a dog trainer full time. From there he decided to dedicate his time to training friends dogs for experience, take online classes, gain mentors through other trainers, and attendend Nepopo school lead by world renown in the dog training world Bart Bellon.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
We talk on the phone about any behavioral issues, training goals, and answer any questions. We then figure a good time frame to get your dog scheduled for 3 weeks to come stay with us. We do our very best to send pictures and are always available to text updates to give you updates on what we are working in and how it's going. At the end of the training we schedule approximately 2 hours to return your dog and sit down with you. We have a personal typed training plan to help assist you in maintaining the new training your dog has learned. We then offer 2-4 1:1 follow up sessions to help you work on any problems you are having after our training program. And we are ALWAYS available to you for phone calls.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
We have hands on training with hundreds of dogs. We have done mentorships with other trainers. Studied many different courses online and have completed many self study courses. Ryan has attended Nepopo school in Missouri.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your services? If so, please share the details here.
Standard pricing for a regular 3 week board and train costs $1,500. This includes any training tools we find brings value to your dog and 2-4 1:1 follow up sessions depending on what people need.
Aggressive dog behavior modification costs $2,000 for a minimum of 4 weeks. If your dog needs longer we do not add cost. It is important to us we get your dog to the best place possible and don't want to rush things for them or you.
We do ask for 2/3 of the payment at pick up and then the rest of the payment after we complete training and return your dog to you.
How did you get started in this business?
Being a veteran I received a very wild working line German shepherd dog from some great friends to help with PTSD from deployment. This is when I discovered a true passion and love to help these animals find their way as I did. From there with my wife's support and creating this amazing business it just has blossomed into something amazing 🙂

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a pro in your area of expertise?
We often hear that you get what you pay for and we did not think much about that. As we get deeply integrated into the dog training world we stand firmly behind that. Look for someone that you get a good feeling about, don't settle for someone because they are "cheaper", ask about updates and pictures if that's what you want, and ask about their training methods
What questions should customers think through before talking to pros about their needs?
It's most important to discuss your expectations with hiring a trainer. It's important to discuss the true behaviors of your dog and what your goals are for training.
