What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
We like to meet with our customers in person so we can provide a clear and complete proposal that addresses their needs. By doing this we can make sure the scope of work is thorough and complete and avoid any surprises once the work starts. Once we provide a quote, the price doesn't change.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
We attend national conferences every year to keep up with the latest products and techniques. We also have training every 2 weeks for all of our painters to reinforce our commitment to safety on the job site and customer satisfaction.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your services? If so, please share the details here.
We have standardized pricing that is based on square footage or the surface area we are painting and/or the number of doors or cabinets we're panting. We simply add up the square footage or number of doors and our software tells us how many hours it will take and how many gallons of paint. Once we know the hours and gallons we just multiply the number by our charge rate and our price per gallon. It's really fairly simple.
How did you get started in this business?
I wanted a business where I could make a difference by bringing a level of customer service that's not normally seen in that industry. The contracting world has a really bad reputation for service so it made sense. It's worked. We've grown from $0 in sales to a workforce of 40 painters and 5 full time key staff in less than 10 years. It's been a lot of fun!
What types of customers have you worked with?
We've painted for more than 2500 customers so we've seen just about everything.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I did an employee appreciation event last fall and took all my employees and their families to Knott's Berry Farm. One of my painters daughters had never been but always wanted to go. They made the sweetest thank you card for me and it melted me on the spot. It made the entire event worthwhile with that card alone.
What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a company in your area of expertise?
Make sure they have a good reputation. Take a look at their online reviews and also check with the California State License Board to insure they are licensed and have workers compensation insurance. Otherwise if someone gets hurt while working on your property you will be on the hook. Injuries do happen in our business so protect yourself.
What questions should customers think through before talking to companies about their needs?
Make sure they understand what all they want done. Don't be afraid to ask for things to be listed as an option so they can pick and choose what's most important in case their needs are more than their budget.
