Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
My typical process is to first have a phone interview and discuss the Scope of Work in order to be ahead of the game on design and estimating.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I'm a trained master carpenter/Painter in the trade as a Summer carpenter's helper at church camps, as a teenager buy since 1983.
I also learned carpentrry, cabinetry and wood working from my Father. I studied History, Spanish and Anthropology in College and I have been the owner of my business as a General Contractor since 1998. I know all phases of construction, masonry, hard-scaping, architectural mill work, custom cabinet making, finish trim, crown moldings and furniture making. I am also proficient at staining, painting and restoration work.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your services? If so, please share the details here.
Yes I price out the Scope of Work based on the amount of estimated labor and materials sub-contractors, profit and overhead in an ideal Scope of work then add 15% for unknown overages, which naturally occure on any substantial project.
This 15% is added in order to give a fixed price estimate.
How did you get started in this business?
I got started in the business by my desire to be an entrepreneur since I was a young boy. I had always enjoyed the challenge and pleasure of building and finishing a project!
I worked for various general contractors as a carpenter's helper and then as a lead carpenter in my early 20s.
What types of customers have you worked with?
I've worked with many types of people from all walks of life and with many different personalities and I enjoy dealing with homeowners and always give sincere and dedicated attention to the details.
I follow a customer communication plan which I came up with. This plan entails prompt follow up on phone calls received by clients within 3-4 hours. Also part of the plan is communication through understsndale emails and not laden with jargon.
What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a pro in your area of expertise?
The advice I would give would be, never hire a contractor who presents you with a one page estimate, which has no start date and no finish date.
Any contractor worth his salt works diligently to completion and communicates with the customer to clarify any natural delays.
