Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
I typically meet with prospective cleints to discuss their project and gather necessary information. From there I write a formal proposal outling all my fees.
I break my projects into 2 phases: preliminary design and final construction documents
1) Preliminary Design: In this phase I will create floor plans and elevations as required to satisfy the client's criteria. We will send these back and forth to each other with critiques and revisions until we get it the way it needs to be. This phase is charged at an hourly rate.
2) Final Construction Documents: I will take our final, approved design and do a complete set of construction drawings that the builder will use to obtain permits and to build with. This phase is charged on square foot basis. The size of the final design will determine the amount.
Between these 2 steps I urge my clients to get some preliminary pricing from builders so we know if we go forward with the final design it will be something you can afford. I do not what to draw something that the cleint will not use.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Arhitectural Technology studies in college

I was hired right out of college. I worked for various fiems for several years and then opened my own office in 1986.
What types of customers have you worked with?
I have designed projects for individual home owners as well and builders and devleopers. I have done small 800 sqft single family custom homes up to 15,000 sqft homes for professional atheletes. I have designed small additons/renovations to projects that added more square footage that the orignal house. I have designed fire restorations, porches and outdoor living spaces, multi-family townhomes projects and office fit-ups. I do not do large commercial projects.
Describe a recent project you are fond of.
I am fond of all of my projects. I love what I do and try to make every project special for the cleint. One project I am especially proud of was the renovation of a 100 year old diary barn into a primary residence. This will project be featured this summer on HGTV.
What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a pro in your area of expertise?
Gather information on what you like and what you want to accomplish. Any info that can be shared to help understand what you are looking for will be helpful - photos, sketches, magazine clippings, anything.
What questions should customers think through before talking to pros about their needs?
The previous question touches on this. In addtion to that, think about time lines and schedules. If there are dealines that need to be met then make those known up front. Otherwise, the most important thing is to feel comfortable with the each other. We will get to kow one another thru this process. If I'm going to design your home then we need to have a good fit with one another.
